Job Details

The English Language Centre (ELC) at the University of Liverpool is accredited by BALEAP and the British Council. In its recent inspection by the British Council, the ELC was awarded 13 out of a possible 15 areas of strength and has subsequently been named an EL Gazette Centre of Excellence 2019.
The ELC is currently looking for suitably qualified English Language teachers to deliver its summer General English courses to students at its Liverpool campus. The General English courses throughout the summer are largely made up of groups of students from different countries who study with the ELC for varying lengths of time.
We have a particularly high demand throughout the period of June and July, and so are interested in receiving applications for people who wish to work with us throughout this period, as well as in receiving applications from those who wish to work through until the end of the course. The start date for both options (including a three-day induction period which is paid) is 12th June 2019. For those interested in working only throughout June and July, the end date is 2 August 2019. For those interested in working for the whole summer period, the end date is 6th September 2019.
Postholders will be responsible for delivering action-oriented English language lessons to General English students. There may also be the opportunity to work on our Business English module and/or other ESP focused modules such as Medical English. For teachers with a suitable profile, there may also be the opportunity to work on our IELTS preparation module. All teachers are expected to be adept in advising students on their progress, and encouraging students to be autonomous learners. Teachers can expect to have 18 hours of contact time per week (including tutorials) and up to 1.5 hours of cover per week (as required). Teachers are expected to select and prepare materials that best meet the needs and interests of their students, although a coursebook is usually provided.
Due to the nature of the course, we are keen to hear from teachers who are comfortable and familiar with the approach to teaching described in the Council of Europe’s Common European of Framework. Teachers who are experienced in delivering action-oriented and/or task-based lessons to adult learners are particularly encouraged to apply. Similarly, we would welcome applications from teachers who are comfortable with helping students chart their progress through the use of portfolios.
Ideally, you will have qualifications which confer TEFL-Q status as set out in the British Council’s Accreditation UK handbook (available on the British Council’s website), and have prior experience of teaching on courses with continuous enrolment. You will have excellent organisational and time management skills and be able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing to variety of audiences. You will be an effective team player while also being able to work independently and on your own initiative.
