Job Details

The Skills Centre at the University of Bath is seeking to appoint well-qualified and experienced tutors of English for Academic Purposes for its BALEAP-accredited summer Pre-sessional English language and academic skills courses.
Teaching on our summer Pre-sessional is rewarding, challenging and, we hope, professionally developmental. To be considered, we require the following qualifications and experience:
• A first degree
• A postgraduate degree or diploma level teaching qualification related to English Language Teaching or equivalent. For example, MA in Applied Linguistics (or similar) or Cambridge English or Trinity Diploma in English Language Teaching of Adults (or equivalent). Teachers may also show evidence of competence to teach English for Academic Purposes with a TEAP Portfolio Accreditation at Associate Fellow level or above.
• Proven knowledge and experience of teaching English for Academic Purposes in a higher education context
We also particularly look for:
• Experience of teaching on university pre-sessional English courses
• Excellent communication and team-working skills
Due to the volume of enquiries we receive we are unable to reply individually to candidates who do not meet minimum requirements. If you meet the relevant requirements of the Person Specification, we will contact you to arrange an interview.
You will teach between 18 – 20 contact hours per week, attend staff meetings and standardisation sessions, assess student progress, perform administrative duties related to teaching and report to the appropriate Course Leader to ensure that the course runs smoothly and is of high quality. Teaching materials are provided but you will be expected to adapt them as appropriate to the needs of your classes.
Employment period includes 5 days induction. A limited amount of standard on and off campus university accommodation is available, generously subsidised by the Skills Centre.
You will be working in a progressive and successful Centre, which was for over 25 years the English Language Centre. In March 2014 it was restructured as the Academic Skills Centre (ASC) to reflect its extended remit to provide academic as well as English language skills support and development to all students across the institution. The ASC now forms part of the Skills Centre, a central professional service, which also includes the Foreign Languages Centre and the Mathematics Resources Centre. The Skills Centre reports directly to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Learning & Teaching.
