We are looking to recruit experienced and committed English for Academic Purposes (EAP) practitioners to join our Heriot-Watt Global College team. The Teaching Associate EAP will co-ordinate and deliver the core skills modules that form part of our new Foundation Year provision, as well as pre-sessional and in-sessional provision. The Teaching Associate EAP will contribute to the academic administration of the courses they teach on, including exam marking and student support activities. They should also expect to contribute to materials development where required, and to supporting the adoption of new innovations within teaching programmes, including online delivery, as appropriate.

About the College

The Heriot-Watt Global College is a new primary academic unit currently under development for launch in 2022/23 academic year. The College will be the academic home for the new Global Foundation Programme for the global Heriot-Watt Group, a new suite of Pre-Master Offerings as well as current academic offerings which include the Pre-Sessional English Programmes and pre Graduate Apprenticeship activities.

The College will be recruiting new teaching staff to deliver its programmes at the Edinburgh campus and will also be the Academic Unit for Current Foundation Programmes and Degree Entry Programme staff in Malaysia and Dubai.

Detailed Description

The Academic English team delivers high-quality pre-sessional academic English programmes, in-sessional support, Foundation Year pathway delivery and other language courses that support the University’s international student recruitment strategy. These programmes play a crucial role in developing students’ language and study competence to enable them to perform well on their destination programmes.

The Teaching Associate EAP will contribute to the academic administration of the courses they teach on, including exam marking and student support activities. They should also expect to contribute to materials development where required, and to supporting the adoption of new innovations within teaching programmes, including online delivery, as appropriate.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Teach Academic English, Research and Study Skills to international foundation year students from a range of subject disciplines
Prepare students for a variety of formative and summative assessments related to their course of study
Show flexibility and creativity in their teaching to ensure that student needs are met and programme aims and outcomes are achieved
Demonstrate a keen interest in and awareness of the needs of international students from a wide range of cultural backgrounds
Maintain accurate records of work and attendance and attend programme and section meetings as required
Mark, grade and provide feedback on student work in a timely manner and to the agreed standard
Use, engage with and fully exploit the University’s virtual learning environment (CANVAS) and other learning and teaching tools as required
Contribute to materials development where required and support the adoption of new innovations within teaching programmes as appropriate
Actively engage with continuous professional development
Deliver high-quality in-sessional support to Heriot-Watt students as needed
While the amount of contact time and other teaching-related activities may vary each week, it is expected that tutors will typically work for a minimum of 35 hours per week, of which up to 20 hours per week will be teaching and tutorials, with the remainder comprising, marking and feedback, record-keeping, meetings, and professional development.

Please note that this job description is not exhaustive, and the role holder may be required to undertake other relevant duties commensurate with the grading of the post as directed by the Head of College, Head of Academic English or other managers as required

Applicants should hold a good first degree and a recognised TEFL qualification (e.g. CELTA, CertTrinity TESOL) as a minimum. and have a minimum of two-years-experience of teaching university level students.

Experience of teaching on EAP courses such as Foundation/International Pathway Programmes, pre-sessional or in-sessional programmes, preferably in a UK university context, is also essential

Education, Qualifications and Experience

Essential

Educated to first degree level or equivalent
Recognised TEFL qualification (e.g. CELTA, Trinity Cert TESOL)
Experience of teaching on EAP courses such as Foundation/International Pathway Programmes, pre-sessional or in-sessional programmes
Competent in the use of relevant EduTech and IT packages
Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team
Desirable

Higher degree in Applied Linguistics/TESOL related field and/or a DELTA
TEAP qualification and/or membership of relevant professional body (e.g. BALEAP)
Experience of teaching on EAP courses such as Foundation/International Pathway Programmes, pre-sessional or in-sessional programmes in a UK context
Familiarity with CANVAS or similar Virtual Learning Environment e.g. Moodle
Background in technical/science or business subject

Basic Salary
£31,406.00
Hours of Work
As necessary, Nominal 35 per week.
Annual Leave
In Edinburgh this is 33 days, plus 9 buildings closed days (and Christmas Eve when it falls on a weekday) for all full time staff, other campuses vary. The national legislative requirement is a total of 28 days per year. The approximate value of the annual leave entitlement is based on the FTE salary for this grade. Part time workers should pro rata this by their FTE.

Pension Benefits
Staff on grade 6 – 10 can opt to join the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) (www.uss.co.uk). The University currently contributes the equivalent of 21.6% of an employee’s annual salary and the employee currently contributes 9.8%. The employee gets tax relief on his/her contributions. National Insurance savings are also available through PensionPlus, and the option to increase pension value through Additional Voluntary Contributions (AVCs). Death in service benefits of 3 x annual salary plus a pension for dependants, long-term illness cover (after 2 years membership).
