Applications are invited for positions in the Language Centre (LC) at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), Suzhou, China.
The LC provides English language and study skills tuition for all students at the University. It works with the University’s Year 1 Committee and academic departments to provide English for Academic Purposes credit-bearing modules to Year 1 and 2 students, as well as providing non-credit bearing language, study skills and writing training across all undergraduate levels via its Continuing Support programme. Other areas of focus are writing support for postgraduate students and credit-bearing modules which are jointly delivered with academic departments. The LC also delivers a growing number of short courses, including pre-sessionals and teacher training. In addition, the LC is responsible for the University’s Chinese and Spanish language provision, with a further language to be added in September 2016.
There are currently more than 140 staff in the LC, which has grown rapidly to become one of the most significant university-level English language centres globally.
Successful applicants must be educated to Master’s degree level, preferably in Applied Linguistics/TESOL or equivalent, and a professional teaching qualification is also desirable. For visa reasons, international candidates must have at least two years of post-Masters teaching experience in a higher education environment and/or at foundation level. All candidates should be able to demonstrate an interest in areas such as the design and development of assessment, syllabus and materials, academic literacies, and language teaching technology.
The expected starting date is 15 August 2016.
The salary range for the position is 15161–30701 RMB/month depending on qualifications and experience. In addition, EAP Tutors are entitled to accommodation and travel allowances, medical insurance, and relocation expenses.
XJTLU is a unique collaborative institution, the first and currently the only university in China to offer both UK and Chinese accredited undergraduate degrees. Founded in 2006 through an agreement between Xi’an Jiaotong University and University of Liverpool, the first cohort of XJTLU students graduated in August 2010, and the University now has over 8000 students studying on campus. The broader Suzhou area encompasses the spirit of both old and new China, with the historic old town a major World Heritage Site. Greater Suzhou is now the fourth largest concentration of economic activity in China in terms of GDP, and SIP offers a high quality of life.
