The Pre-Sessional Programme is run by the University’s Language Centre situated within the Department of Languages, Information and Communication. We are looking for tutors to join our team for our 10 and 5-week programmes.
Job Details: Tutors will be required to work a 35-hour week teaching approximately 15 hours per week at our city-centre All Saints campus. Classes cover English for Academic Purposes, critical thinking and academic skills development. Tutors will be expected to give regular spoken and written feedback to students on their progress, conduct and mark assessments, and support students with their Research Project.
Tutors will attend regular meetings, as well as participating in moderation, observations and staff development sessions. Both programmes will include a 4-day tutor induction.
Dates:
10-week programme
Tutor induction: 20th – 25th June
Course dates: 26th June – 6th September
Assessment period: 9th – 13th September
5-week programme
Tutor induction: 25th – 30th July
Course dates: 31st July – 6th September
Assessment period: 9th – 13th September
Essential Requirements: DELTA (or equivalent) or CELTA plus a Masters in TESOL or related area; relevant teaching experience; native or near-native command of spoken and written English.
Desirable: experience of teaching EAP at a British Higher Education Institution; experience of teaching on a Pre-Sessional Programme; knowledge of technology in EAP teaching.
Key tasks:
• To challenge ideas, foster debate and encourage students to develop skills in critical discourse and rational thinking as part of a Pre-sessional English Course.
• To administer assessments measuring student performance and ensuring that learning outcomes have been met; set students’ work, assess and make sound judgements about progress, providing feedback that is honest, detailed and constructive.
• To respond appropriately to day-to-day operational problems and solve issues raised by students, referring matters on where necessary.
• To act as a personal tutor to a group of students on the course.
• The postholder will be required to engage with a cover rota to Pre-sessional Course lessons during normal working hours, which may sometimes involve short notice.
10-week course: £7715.89 (gross), inclusive of holiday pay at 12%.
5-week course: £4553.64 (gross), inclusive of holiday pay at 12%.
This equates to £632.45 per week, based on a 35-hour working week.
