Job Details

The Sussex Centre for language Studies (SCLS) at the University of Sussex is looking to recruit suitably qualified and experienced Pre-sessional tutors to teach on our 5-week Pre-sessional course from 29th July to 30th August. These are full time teaching posts of 21 hours per week that includes preparation and teaching of lessons, liaising with colleagues, preparing students for assessments and providing feedback, and recording attendance records and assessment marks.

Key Responsibilities

To teach 21 contact hours per week over the 5-week teaching period to help students reach the required standard in the necessary language and academic skills, as well as enhance their experience of university life in the UK.

You will:

a. deliver classes according to the course handbook guidelines, and ensure that all aspects of the Pre-sessional course are met as required

b. make effective use of the teaching materials provided in order to meet the needs of the students; select, create, and share supplementary materials as needed

c. ensure that all Pre-sessional course administration (attendance records and mark sheets) is completed accurately and on time

d. set and mark student work as required and in accordance with the assessment schedule, mark schemes and criteria, and to provide written and oral formative feedback to students

e. assist students in accessing and making effective use of the VLE (Canvas)

f. provide pastoral care to students and inform course convenors of any issues which may affect some students

g. attend all paid standardisation sessions and staff meetings during the course, in addition to the 2-day induction prior to the beginning of the course

Knowledge and Experience
Proficient or native speaker of English E
EFL classroom teaching experience to young adults E
Awareness of the challenges international students face E
Computer literacy with good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint E
Familiarity with academic conventions and contexts E
Experience of providing student support, both academic and pastoral E
Experience of Canvas or other VLEs D
Classroom teaching experience in UK HE contexts D
Experience of EAP or Pre-sessional teaching D

Qualifications and Education
Hold an accredited TESOL/ Diploma (e.g. DELTA), or MA in TESOL or related subject E
Hold a First Degree E

Skills and Abilities
Strong communication and interpersonal skills E
Strong team player E
Adaptable and flexible attitude, recognising the intensive nature of Pre-sessional teaching E
Ability to work in an intercultural environment E
Have worked overseas and/or studied a foreign language D

Job Salary & Benefits

The role is grade 6 – £46.65 per hour
Holiday pay is paid at the rate of 12.1% after the contract has been completed.
Unfortunately we are not able to offer university accommodation.
