Job Details

In summer 2021, the Centre is offering an innovative 10- and 6-week summer pre-sessional focused on self-directed and problem-based learning. We are offering experienced EAP practitioners the opportunity to teach on these pre-sessional courses. All our teachers will receive a competitive salary, annual leave entitlement and the option of city-centre accommodation. They will be working as part of a dynamic and experienced team of fellow teachers, at one of the country’s top universities.

There will be both online and on campus options for both the 10- and 6-week pre-sessional courses which both include a mixture of asynchronous and synchronous sessions. All teachers will be based in the UK for both online and on campus options*.

Dates, including induction:

  • 11 weeks (PS10) including student and tutor induction: Monday 14th June – Friday 27th August 2021. The first two weeks of this option will be online for both students and teachers.

(Please note accommodation is only available for teachers on this course from 27th June.)

  • 7-weeks (PS6) including student and tutor induction: Monday 12th July – Friday 27th August 2021

This is a full time 35hr working week position. Duties include:

  • Engagement in a one-week tutor induction
  • 17.5hrs contact teaching per week divided between two groups of students (mostly PG)
  • Delivery of in-house material
  • Preparation, marking and provision of regular feedback to students
  • Conducting 1-1 or small group student tutorials
  • Engagement in training and mentor meetings
  • Engagement in CPD development events

Candidates for these posts are required to have a minimum of a first degree and a DELTA (or equivalent), or a Masters in a relevant subject and previous experience of teaching on Pre-sessional courses. In return for your effort and commitment on what is a very intensive course, we hope to provide a supportive and collaborative environment where you will continue to develop as an EAP practitioner.

The Centre is run on the principles of collaboration, development, transparency, transferability, autonomy and reflexivity at all levels within our community. For those who are interested in the BALEAP fellowship scheme, we have TEAP assessors in-house to carry out observations for your TEAP portfolio. If you feel you would benefit from further development in EAP teaching, please check the website for details or contact teap-enquiries@bristol.ac.uk to express interest and register for one of our TEAP courses.

For full information on the Pre-sessional courses please refer to: http://www.bristol.ac.uk/english-language/study/pre-sessional-courses/

We will take into account your preferences, 11 or 7 weeks and for online and on campus options, although this cannot be guaranteed as it is dependent on student numbers. For online delivery, all tutors will be required to have a:

  • desktop computer or laptop (Mac or PC)
  • a reliable highspeed internet connection
  • and the ability to conduct online video conferences with students.

We also recommend that teachers have access to a headset with a microphone for use during online teaching sessions.

Accommodation: We offer city-centre accommodation for those teachers not living locally. This will likely be located in the Colston Street building in the city centre and within walking distance of the campus. On entering your accommodation, you will be allocated to a living circle. You will be able to socialise with this group as if you were a household. Any socialisation outside of the living circle will need to be in line with government guidelines at the time.

The cost will be met by the Centre except for the sum of £25 per week including VAT to cover utilities. This is payable online and covers the cost of utilities and cleaning. You will be sent relevant details once accommodation is confirmed and lets will be agreed with the accommodation office on a first-come-first-served basis. Priority for accommodation will be given to on campus teachers not living locally. We regret we cannot accommodate families in these facilities, all accommodation is single occupancy.

Please note accommodation in Bristol for the 11wk (PS10) is only available for the on campus portion of the course from 27th June. For the online portion of the course teachers will still need to be in the UK.
