Job Details

The Heriot-Watt Global College is a new primary academic unit currently under development for launch in 2022/23 academic year. The College will be the academic home for the new Global Foundation Programme for the global Heriot-Watt Group, a new suite of Pre-Master and other on-going academic support and pathway offerings, e.g. the Pre-Sessional English Programmes and the pre Graduate Apprenticeship activities.

The College will be recruiting new teaching staff to deliver its programmes at the Edinburgh campus and will also be the Academic Unit for Current Foundation Programmes and Degree Entry Programme staff in Malaysia and Dubai. In the near future, the College will also establish new academic partnership to expand its reach to other geographical regions either through on-line delivery or via an approved learning partners.

It is anticipated The College will provide pathways for over 1000 students to progress in the degree programme of choice at one of the Heriot-Watt campuses in UK, UAE and Malaysia.

To achieve this ambition, the University is now seeking for an exceptional academic leader to lead the development of this exciting new educational venture of the University. This role can be based at one of our global locations and some travel to other locations is expected.

The role

As the Head of this newly established primary academic unit, you will report to the Vice-Principal and Provost, and be a core member of the Global Operations Executive.

You will be responsible for leading the College across all its locations globally, including in Scotland, Dubai, and Malaysia.

You will play a central role in leading the implementation of the University’s strategy and thereby deliver Heriot-Watt’s mission.

You will demonstrate the values of the institution in all you do and, through this, foster these within the College and more widely across the institution.

You will lead and manage the College across all its locations globally to deliver the following:

a clear vision for the College that includes specific research and learning strategies that will deliver the required growth in scale and standing envisaged in the University’s strategy; and
the development and execution of College rolling annual plans that will deliver the University’s strategy.

You will also lead and manage the College to deliver the following across all its locations globally:

innovative and high-quality teaching, scholarship, and enterprise;
an outstanding, world-leading learning experience for all the College’s students; and
an inclusive, supportive, and inspiring environment for staff in which high performance is expected and sought by all.

You will provide wider leadership within the institution, including through:

profound contributions to the Global Operations Executive and positive engagement with the University Executive.
deep commitment to establish the College and across the University as a whole; and
positive engagement with other Academic Schools and the Professional Services to develop and ensure timely delivery initiatives related to the College and other new initiatives grounded in the University’s strategy.

You will lead the building of new pathway partnership with credible education partners globally.

You will lead the building and projecting of the College’s profile and influence within the University and externally, including within government bodies, funding councils, and industry globally.

You will be responsible for effectively managing all the College’s financial and people resources, including delivering the College’s financial business plan on an annual and ongoing basis.

You will continue to maintain a high-quality programme of personal research and/or scholarship during your tenure as Head of College.

You must be able to travel as needed, including to all our campuses in Scotland, Dubai and Malaysia.

You will undertake other relevant duties from time to time as directed by the Vice-Principal and Provost.

Person Specification

Skills, Knowledge, Experience and Qualifications

Evidence of successful leadership within an education institution, transnational education provider, or pre-tertiary college.
Evidence that you can see the bigger institutional picture and how you will contribute to this as a leader of a new academic start-up.
Evidence of an ability to lead major cultural change in a start-up environment.
Evidence of successful leadership and delivering of new and innovative pedagogic change project.
Evidence of strong financial and business acumen and the ability to optimise resource utilisation, particularly in a start-up environment.
Evidence of an outstanding international reputation in education research and scholarship for learning and teaching. A track record of working with young adults is an added advantage.
Understanding of international higher education landscapes of particular relevance to the wider Heriot-Watt Group.
Possess a doctoral qualification, preferably in a field relating to new paradigms of education or young adult education and development
