Job Details

The UCL Centre for Languages & International Education (CLIE) is looking to appoint well-qualified and experienced Associate Lecturers in English for Academic Purposes for our Standard Pre-sessional programme, either online or face-to-face.

The Standard Pre-sessional course is a 10-week contract from 24 June – 30 August 2024. The contract includes a comprehensive five-day induction at UCL’s Bloomsbury campus, seven weeks of teaching, and an additional two weeks at the end of the course for the marking of assessments, writing reports and administrative tasks.

You must have the right to live and work in the UK.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Associate Lecturers provide up to 21 contact hours per week. Teaching is either completely face-to-face on campus or completely online, but please note that all tutorials and assessments are conducted online.

PLEASE NOTE: those teaching on one of our online courses will be required to attend the induction onsite in London but are not required to be onsite for the remainder of the course. They must however be based in the UK for the duration of the course. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide any campus accommodation for these posts.

CONTRACT:

Due to recruitment being so close to the course start date, applicants will be placed on an ‘As and When’ contract. You will be paid hourly, which means time taken off won’t be paid. Your pay will be equivalent of UCL grade 7, point 34 pro rata annual salary (£46,732 inclusive of London allowance) for 36.5 hours of work per week. You will be paid monthly by bank transfer. In addition to this, you will also receive a pro rata payment for holiday entitlement based on 27 days per annum, to be paid at the end of the contract.
The first payment will be made at the end of your second month – payment requests are submitted to the payroll for the month that has passed.

KEY REQUIREMENTS:

The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic teacher, with a proven track record of excellent teaching. You will have significant English Language Teaching (ELT) experience, and ideally have previous Pre-sessional / EAP experience. You should have a keen interest in and awareness of the needs of international students, as well as the demands of research and autonomous learning within the context of a UK university. You will be equipped to deal with teaching on an intensive course, having the ability to plan, prepare and mark effectively, and balance competing pressures. You should be able to work with minimal supervision, and be proficient in using digital devices and tools including Microsoft Teams, Word and PowerPoint.

Please take particular note of the minimum qualifications for this post. You must hold a first degree in any field, and in addition:
• EITHER an accredited Diploma in ELT/TESOL, such as DELTA (or equivalent Level 7 ELT/TESOL teaching qualification with at least 4 hours observed and assessed teaching);
• OR an accredited Certificate in ELT/TESOL, such as a CELTA (or equivalent Level 5 ELT/TESOL teaching qualification with at least 6 hours observed and assessed teaching) AND Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics or ELT/TESOL.

Please note that all applicants will require access to the following equipment:
• a modern laptop in good working order with:
• 50GB free HD space
• an i5 or equivalent processor and 8GB RAM
• a webcam and a headset
• broadband internet with 50MB/s download speed
