Job Details

Located within the faculty of the Institute of Education, the Centre for Languages & International Education (CLIE) is looking to appoint a number of well-qualified and experienced Associate Lecturers in English for Academic Purposes for our Pre-sessional programme.

Our Pre-sessional courses are aimed primarily at UCL postgraduate conditional offer-holders going on to study a wide range of academic disciplines. The programme equips students with the English language proficiency and academic skills and attributes that they need to be successful in their follow-on degree.
We offer three courses, 11-, 8- and 6-week, with students opting to study either online or blended face-to-face in our Bloomsbury campus.

Duties and Responsibilities:
All Associate Lecturers provide 21 contact hours per week. This includes teaching either our blended course on campus or online and conducting online tutorials. They deliver lessons that provide high quality instruction and develop students’ academic language, skills and autonomy to the level required for their future degree programmes. Associate Lecturers also develop students’ potential to contribute effectively to their chosen academic community through tutorials and online engagement.
In addition, Associate Lecturers will attend weekly team meetings, participate in assessment standardisation and moderation processes, mark assessments, and complete all associated administrative duties.

Course dates:
11-week course: 5th June – 1st September 2023
8-week course: 26th June – 1st September 2023
6-week course: 10th July – 1st September 2023

All courses include a five-day induction at UCL’s Bloomsbury campus and an additional week at the end of the course to complete reports and administrative tasks. For this reason, contract dates extend two weeks longer than the course length for students.
Those teaching on one of our online courses will be required to attend the induction onsite but are not required to be onsite for the remainder of the course. They must however be based in the UK for the duration of the course.

Technical requirements:
Please note that in order to teach on the CLIE Pre-sessional course, all applicants require access to the following equipment:
• a modern laptop in good working order with:
• 50GB free HD space
• recommended minimum specs of 1.5GHz, 8GB RAM
• a webcam
• a headset

Key Requirements:
Successful candidates will hold a first degree. In addition, they should hold either a diploma in ELT/TESOL (e.g. Delta, Trinity DipTESOL) and/or a Master’s degree, preferably in Applied Linguistics/ELT, plus a certificate in ELT/TESOL (e.g Celta, Trinity CertTESOL).
They should have experience of teaching English for Academic Purposes, ideally on a UK Pre-sessional course, and of providing academic and pastoral support to students. They will be equipped to deal with teaching on an intensive course, having the ability to plan, prepare and mark effectively, and balance competing pressures. They will be a good team player with a collegiate approach. Applicants will also have a high degree of technical competence.

Job Salary & Benefits
