JOB TITLE: Academic Writing and Study Skills Lecturer, Higher Education

1. PURPOSE
(a) To co-ordinate and deliver a service to develop students’ independent study and English language skills

(b) To teach a range of academic and language development strategies and study skills to students on Prep HE, Higher Education, as required, utilising specialist skills to support students for whom English is sometimes not their first language. The post holder will be expected to deliver high quality provision to students in line with an agreed work plan.

(c) To contribute to the effective learning of students, including the development of students’ independent learning skills

2. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

• Degree in a related subject
• PG Qualification in a related subject (e.g. , TESOL, TEFLE, English Linguistics, English Philology)
• CELTA/ DELTA/ PGCert in HE or HEA Associate Fellowship/ Fellowship

3. MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

Specialist

• To undertake specialist teaching and tutorial responsibilities, assessments, implementing a range of inclusive teaching methodologies to provide appropriate support within the context of the GBS, as directed by the Academic Directors and Deans, in order to enable students to receive a high-quality educational experience
• To devise and document sessional, bespoke courses, workshop plans and individual schemes of work as required, ensuring current, relevant and effective teaching is consistently delivered across the service
• To maintain accurate records in accordance with GBS requirements, ensuring compliance and maintenance of relevant systems
• To deliver teaching according to agreed standards, and identify areas for potential improvement, recommending these to the Academic Director and Deans in order to assist with the maintenance and enhancement of the quality of teaching and learning, and service delivery
• To deliver teaching in accordance with the GBS’s Learning and Teaching strategy
• To undertake CPD as directed from time to time in order to maintain currency in the specialist area and in inclusive teaching practices
• To monitor student attendance and to maintain up to date records of work.
• To provide feedback on individual and class progress in their understanding of, and progress in English
• To provide personal tutorials with students. To work closely with students’ writing to provide constructive comments that are reactive to the individual student need; to explain where work fails to meet assessment criteria and to suggest ways for students to improve their work / working practices
• To record details from these appointments for statistical, evaluation and quality purposes, and to refer students to other services as appropriate.
• To effectively engage with partners’’ VLE and research resources and facilitate students’ learning by means of online resources and activities

Student Experience
• To contribute to the enhancement of the student experience through effective delivery of specialist responsibilities in order to meet student expectations, and to support recruitment, retention and progression, and the GBS brand
• To promote high levels of student performance in accordance with GBS strategic aims and objectives regarding the student experience
• To represent the GBS as directed from time to time in order to enhance the support to students and ensure the GBS achieves its strategic objectives
• To engage with the wider GBS as required in order to support and represent the activities of the service

Planning & Organisation

• To carry out the administration and organisation of pre-sessional and in-sessional courses, bespoke courses, group workshops and individual or group tutorials
• To contribute to GBS quality assurance systems and processes
• To work with project teams / working groups to support the achievement of project objectives as may be required
• To engage / comply with staff management processes, e.g. the GBS Staff Development Programme (SDP)
• To maintain information and documentation on the service in the delivery of duties as required
• To identify and implement improvements to the Academic Support, taking account of student and staff feedback, changes to policy, strategy or external environment.

General
• To undertake staff development appropriate to the post as may be identified and required from time to time, and in accordance with the GBS’s Staff Development Programme
• To observe and implement health and safety and information security responsibilities as specified within the GBS’s Health and Safety and IT Policies
• To demonstrate professionalism in the role as a representative of the GBS, incorporating GBS core values in the delivery of duties
• To observe equality and diversity practices and procedures and promote equality of opportunity at all times
• To observe and adhere to all GBS policies relevant to the role.
• To undertake such other duties as may reasonably be requested
• To travel on occasion to support and deliver Academic Support sessions and related activities at GBS locations outside of London

3. LIAISON WITH STAFF AT GBS

(a) Reporting to the GBS Associate Dean for Learning and Teaching. To liaise with the Managing Director, Associate Deans, Quality Managers, Programme Leads, Subject Module Leaders and other GBS staff, as required.

(b) To liaise with all staff at GBS to promote quality enhancement for academic activities.
