Job Details

Background

Our university college, situated in Guangzhou, has a position available for the role of an Academic English Teacher beginning early next year (from February 2023 onwards). Teachers will be responsible for teaching small groups of science undergraduates English for Academic Purposes (EAP). This is an exciting opportunity to work in a global environment alongside an internationally-minded team of university educators.

Job Details:

Teachers are required to teach 256 hours per semester, normally sixteen hours of EAP to science undergraduates per week. There are two semesters per year, typically lasting for sixteen weeks per semester. The semester beginning February 2022 will focus on writing and speaking skills to ensure students can study effectively in an English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) environment. The role involves encouraging students to develop their reading of academic texts with a view to producing academic-style work. Teachers will typically be responsible for students from one or two sciences disciplines. Teachers are expected to fulfil all scheduled teaching duties during the academic semester.

Additional Responsibilities:

• Teachers are required to assess students and give feedback on draft written work, grade final submissions, and assess students’ presentation skills.

• Teachers are expected to formatively assess students and take a contingent approach to teaching and learning. This requires weekly planning meetings and designing tasks and lessons to meet the learning outcomes indicated in the syllabus.

• Teachers are required to attend weekly or fortnightly staff meetings and be open to formative classroom observation and appraisal from the senior Academic English Teacher and/or programme coordinators.

• Teachers are expected to fulfil other duties as assigned, which may include: record keeping (attendance, summative assessment, continuous assessment) office hours, training sessions, compliance with official administrative regulations, etc.
