Fixed term teaching positions on our 2023 Online Pre-Sessional Courses

Long Course:
11 April – 28th July; teacher induction 3rd – 4th April.

Medium Course:
22 May – 28th July; teacher induction 15th – 17th May.

Short Course:
26 June – 28th July; teacher induction 19th – 21st June.

A further retake week takes place 31st July – 4th August with optional invigilating and marking available for teachers. Participation will be offered during the course.

Main Duties

– Online teaching of English for Academic Purposes as part of a collegiate course team. This includes: lesson preparation and delivery via Zoom; use of Canvas VLE; providing targeted and constructive student feedback; online invigilating and marking; pastoral and academic tutorial support; and upholding the standards of our pre-sessional courses

– Participation in the teacher induction programme, staff meetings and other events as required

– Accurate and timely record keeping

Essential

– Excellent teaching skills including an excellent ability to adapt to the needs of students within the course parameters, and to engage students in order to deepen learning
– A CELTA (or equivalent with substantial TEFL component)
– A minimum of 2 years recent English language teaching experience- preferably some in English for Academic Purposes
– The ability to cheerfully adapt to the requirements of our course
– The ability to work collaboratively and independently to achieve course aims
– The ability to consistently produce high quality work within tight deadlines
– The ability to maintain high professional standards and a positive outlook throughout the course
– A good level of IT literacy: working knowledge of video conferencing programs in general (Zoom and Teams specifically) for teaching; routine use of standard educational technology: word processing, spreadsheets, email, VLE (Canvas) etc. for materials adaptation, online learning and routine record keeping tasks.
– Experience of teaching multilingual classes
– Awareness of current UK Higher Education teaching and learning conventions
– Knowledge of the academic and pastoral needs of international students on a pre-sessional course
– Technical capability for online teaching: working equipment and reliable internet (Zoom requires internet bandwidth of up to 3 Mbps). A reliable and sufficiently fast machine to work on with plenty of free space. A working camera, headset and microphone to conduct lessons online.
– A second monitor set up for assessment invigilation.

Desirable
– Recent experience of teaching online
– Recent experience of teaching EAP to groups of students from mixed disciplines.
– Recent experience of teaching on UK higher education pre-sessional courses
– DELTA (or equivalent with substantial TEFL component)
– Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics or related subject (preferred); or in any other subject
– Experience of undergraduate art and design students (for some positions)

Job Salary & Benefits

Pre-Sessional EAP tutors are employed as Hourly Paid Lecturers.
Weekly schedules vary but over the entire course we offer the following:
Fixed hours: teaching, meetings, induction and training etc.
Variable hours: hours in addition to fixed hours comprising of weekly tutorials and marking (based on class size). Example class range of 8 –16 students*. Hours do not include retake week.

Long Course: 15 full-time teaching weeks and pre-course induction
Fixed hours: 413 hours. Variable hours: 115 – 230 hours

Medium Course: 10 full-time teaching weeks and pre-course induction
Fixed hours: 273 hours. Variable hours: 80 – 160 hours

Short Course: 5 full-time teaching weeks and pre-course induction
Fixed hours: 150 hours. Variable hours: 40 – 80 hours

*These figures are intended to be a helpful guide to marking and tutorial workload. While every attempt is made to keep within the minimum and maximum class size, unforeseen circumstances may impact this.

Standard Kingston rates of pay apply and currently start at: £24.88 – these rates include London weighting and holiday pay.

University Halls of Residence accommodation is not offered as the course is online.
