Job details
The Centre for Academic Language & Development (CALD) at the University of Bristol is seeking to appoint an external examiner for its summer pre-sessional courses.
We run 10-week and 6-week courses, both on-campus and online, with the majority of students choosing to study online. Suitable candidates would therefore have extensive experience with the provision of pre-sessional courses in the UK as well as a preferred interest in digital education and online provision.
Our pre-sessional courses are mainly attended by pre-Masters students, and we take a developmental, portfolio-based approach, with students being encouraged to steer their own learning with the guidance of their tutors. Students exhibit portfolio work at the end of the course through a presentation, during which they provide evidence of their progress in response to the feedback provided. Both formative and summative assessments are aligned to CEFR benchmarks.
Our previous external examiner, having reached the end of their term in 2025, described our approach to learning/teaching and assessment on these modules as 'innovative for the sector'.
Further details of our courses can be found here: https://www.bristol.ac.uk/academic-language/study/pre-sessional/

Competitive rates and expenses paid.
