Head of Teaching Programmes & Deputy Director

Reporting to the Director, English Language Programmes, to manage and co-ordinate delivery of English language and pathway teaching in line with the University’s mission for the recruitment, retention and support of international students.

Job Description

Management

To be an active member of the ELP Senior Management Team, making a significant contribution to the management of the Division (strategy, policy, planning, budget, reporting, financial viability, welfare, values & behaviours).
To provide support and advice to senior management especially in regard to the management of teaching programme issues and risks.
To work with the other members of the ELP Senior Management Team to ensure effective communication and to build trust whilst maintaining confidentiality.
To take a lead role in the planning and delivery of major English language projects in support of the University’s strategy.
To work in the proactive implementation of CU/ELP policies, including the practical application of and compliance with new policies; to formulate new policy as required.
To line manage the English Language Managers and Quality & Accreditation Officer.
To ensure the effective deployment of ELP teaching staff across programmes, and the effective use of teaching rooms and resources.
To ensure effective recruitment of teaching-related staff and high quality programmes of induction and ongoing staff development (including the delivery of training).
To ensure consistent line management of all teaching staff; to develop and implement performance management measures, as appropriate.
To deputise for the Director, as required.

Job Salary & Benefits

Salary: £49,149 – £56,950 per annum (Grade 8)

Programme Co-ordination & Development

To coordinate the development and review of English language teaching programmes in line with the University’s mission for the recruitment and retention of international students while meeting internal quality standards and external accreditation standards for service.
To co-ordinate the work of the Programme Managers (including managing probation, teaching observation and appraisal processes) and to maintain an operational overview of teaching and other responsibilities for the 3 teams.
To ensure the timely production of compliant submissions for Annual Review and Periodic Review processes for ELP, liaising with other members of the senior management team.
To take the lead role in accreditation of programmes.
To oversee and monitor the outcomes of student-staff panels, boards of studies, exam boards, focus groups and feedback mechanisms in support of quality assurance and programme development; to ensure effective student complaint and attendance monitoring procedures are in place, in line with University policy.
Work with the Programme Managers to ensure that all aspects of programme activity are integrated and co-ordinated (including timetable, cover and contingency).
To ensure the production of plans and targets for all English Language teaching teams in line with ELP and International Recruitment plans, in consultation with appropriate colleagues.
To monitor the development of syllabuses, materials and resources for the programmes while balancing different demands and in line with ELP/CU policies and the Teaching & Learning and Assessment Strategies.
To ensure best practice in teaching, testing and marking procedures (including standardisation, moderation, feedback to students, use of technology, inclusivity).

Essential Criteria

Excellent organisational and multi-programme management skills and the ability to operate at a strategic level, including a proven ability to manage multiple projects, logistics and conflicting priorities, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a large team.
Proven ability to shape developments through active participation and leadership of teaching/academic teams, including effective line-management (including managing probation, and professional development review processes) together with staff development and performance management.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written) with a proven ability to communicate complex ideas effectively and a proven ability to motivate staff and build and sustain successful working relationships
Demonstrable analytical skills and the ability to take a strategic approach, exercising considerable personal responsibility, judgement, creative thinking, initiative and teamworking.
Excellent teaching skills and extensive classroom teaching experience (groups) in English as a Foreign Language, a significant part of which will be EAP in higher education.
Significant experience of managing English Language /EAP programmes in an HE environment. Experience of setting standards in quality assurance activity.
Native speaker of English (or IELTS 9.0), qualified to degree level, with a Diploma in TEFL/TESOL or equivalent qualification.
Significant experience of designing and developing programmes/modules and teaching materials for tailored EAP courses.
Excellent IT skills and experience of using software and systems relevant to the post.
Willing to take holidays outside the teaching timetable and to teach at different locations around the campus, taking teaching materials along where necessary, and an understanding of issues facing international students entering UK universities.

Desirable Criteria

Masters degree in Applied Linguistics, TEFL or TESOL.
Experience of teaching overseas.
Basic Welsh language skills or willingness to learn to basic level.

Teaching

To teach for a maximum of 6 hours a week during the academic year, as agreed each year alongside other commitments and priorities.
To write and coordinate a course and related assessment, as necessary.
To carry out other duties and responsibilities, appropriate to the post, as required by the line manager (Director of Division or nominee).
All staff will be expected to work flexibly as part of the team to achieve the Division’s objectives and to perform other tasks which are not included above but which may be required from time to time to support the work of the Division, but which will be consistent with the role.
