21st March 2026
University of Sheffield
Call for Proposals now open!
PLEASE NOTE THE DEADLINE OF MONDAY 19TH JANUARY 2026 AT 5PM. WE MAY NOT BE ABLE TO ACCEPT PROPOSALS AFTER THIS DATE AND TIME.
The University of Sheffield invites you to propose sessions/output for a hybrid Professional Issues Meeting (PIM day conference) on 21st March 2026 on the role of EAP in English Medium and Transnational Education in Sheffield and online. The last EMI focussed PIM was at the University of Southampton in 2016 and over that last decade, there has been a continuing increase in global education, with subjects being taught in English overseas in HE institutions, online or in blended contexts. There are growing numbers of TNE arrangements with UK institutions where programmes are split between providers, locations and curriculums. In most cases EAP will form part of the student journey, whether pre-or in-sessionally, and whether explicitly or implicitly. The aim of the PIM is to look at the roles and opportunities the EAP sector and practitioners have in these developing areas.
Please use this form to propose various formats of sessions and output for the theme above and below:
This is a hybrid event and expects to attract an international audience of EAP/ELT/EMI academics and professionals to support disseminating research and ideas for good practice in the EAP community. Areas could include:
Curriculum & Teaching:
- Designing and delivering EAP courses for global, blended, and online EMI/TNE students.
- Integrating EAP with subject content (the EAP/EMI collaboration model).
Professional Roles & Development:
- The changing role and identity of EAP tutors in TNE and EMI.
Training and support needs for EAP staff and subject lecturers in international settings. - Navigating partnerships and politics between different TNE institutions.
Quality & Impact:
- Ensuring fair assessment and quality of EAP across multiple TNE locations.
- Measuring the long-term impact of EAP on student success in EMI degrees.
Student Experience & Support:
- Providing accessible and effective in-sessional EAP support for TNE students.
- Helping students adapt to different academic cultures and expectations in global education.
Linguistic Focus & Challenges:
- The role of EAP in supporting academic vocabulary, grammar, and discourse in EMI classes.
- Managing multilingual approaches/translanguaging and L1 use in the EMI/TNE classroom to support content learning.
- Addressing the academic language challenges students face.
