EAP in the North:Critical Thinking

20th January 2017

At this event, three questions relating to CT from an EAP perspective were explored:

·         How, in the EAP classroom, do we illustrate, make explicit and enable engagement in CT?

·         How does CT manifest itself in different disciplines?

·         How can the complexity of real world issues be accommodated in the EAP classroom?

Prof. Gavin Brown (PVC for Education, University of Liverpool) said a few words on the broader importance of CT in HE. There were contributions from academic staff who gave accounts of how CT is viewed in their particular disciplines. A final presentation was given by Dr Phil Leeke (ELC) on the use of metaphors to capture the complexity of CT, ideas which Phil has developed while designing a new in-sessional programme on CT.

The event has stimulated discussion on- and offline. A response has been written by Sue Argent; please see also her slides and handout of a talk on the topic at a PIM in 2008.
