Description
The purpose of this project is to evaluate the contribution of observation to TEAP accreditation through the lens of observer cognition. As such, this study aims to access observers’ cognitive processes during observation, how they make sense of the complexity of a teaching/learning episode in order to connect practice with the TEAP criteria. The research question is: How do observers identify and interpret the TEAP criteria during observation? The method consists of a comparison of observers’ (n=9) interpretation of the TEAP criteria demonstrated within an EAP lesson. There are two stages: first, observers watch a recorded lesson and complete the TEAP observation record; second, in a follow-up interview, observers are asked to recall the observation experience and rationalise their thought processes. Data analysis is quantitative, a comparison of observers’ scoring of the criteria, and qualitative, thematic analysis of the interview transcripts. It is anticipated that the results will provide insight into how observation operates and its value within the scheme, including practical recommendations for observers and their trainers.
Project update (June 2025)
Nine sets of data, completed observation records and interviews, have been collected prior to data analysis, scheduled for July/August. Preliminary findings:
- Observation is strongly felt to be central to the TEAP scheme.
- For observation to be most effective, there needs to be a full context, including a pre-lesson meeting with the teacher and lesson plan.
- Certain TEAP competencies, for example, FA6 ‘You use the outcomes of assessment & feedback to inform your teaching’, are resistant to observation.
- There is awareness that EAP teachers often work in rather prescribed course types, which may limit their pedagogical choices and capacity to meet a whole range of criteria.
